Are You Compatible? Discover the 4 Essential Requirements for Successful Relationships

"Are You Compatible? Discover the 4 Essential Requirements for Successful Relationships"

"Opposites attract" is a common saying, but for this attraction to lead to a successful long-term relationship, the term "opposite" should refer to a complementarity of skills rather than very different preferences. In short, for a relationship to last, you need to be compatible. Most people think of compatibility as liking the same things, but it's actually much more than that. For a relationship to thrive, it needs to fulfill four basic requirements for both partners.

They are, in order of importance:

    Trust:-

In a relationship, it's crucial for partners to share compatible values. Each person has their own set of values and principles, and it's important to be in sync with each other. What may seem like a harmless white lie to one person could be a significant issue for their partner. Similarly, actions such as cheating on an exam or wasting food may be seen differently by each individual. These are relatively minor issues compared to larger topics such as religious beliefs, sexual conduct, and parenting. To build trust in a relationship, partners should have harmony in their values. They don't have to be perfect, but they should agree on what is acceptable and what is not. While partners don't need to have identical values, understanding, predicting, and tolerating each other's values is key to compatibility.

2. Assimilate:

Your partner is someone you will spend a lot of time with and with whom you will share a lot of privacy. As humans, we tend to reject anything new trying to become a part of our world. This is similar to how our bodies may reject a transplanted organ. Just as an organ that should not be rejected, a successful partner needs to be assimilated. That is where three types of compatibility are important:

Skills complementarity: Opposites attract, as the saying goes. Gaining a different perspective enriches both your life and your relationship. Seeking help in areas where you lack expertise is also beneficial. Entering a new venture with the knowledge that your partner supports you is valuable. Understanding that life would be more challenging without your partner. A relationship is balanced when both partners can contribute equally.

Compatibility of initiative: Is one of you always the one making the first move when it comes to activities, sacrifices, or making time for special occasions? Is it always the same person who has to make the first conciliatory move after a fight? Alternatively, does one partner feel crowded by the other's constant initiatives? If so, there may be an imbalance that could drain the relationship.
Cultural compatibility: Our culture is shaped by our community, religious beliefs, education, language, cuisine, and more. The more diverse a couple is, the richer their interactions and achievements. However, diversity also brings the risk of intolerance, with one partner consciously or unconsciously trying to diminish the other. The true test is the couple’s evolution over time: are the cultural differences increasing or decreasing? As the couple develops its own culture, these differences should decrease; the opposite is an early indicator of danger.

4. Enjoy:

You can be great together in terms of trust, acceptance and achievement but ideally you still have to enjoy each other to cement your long-term success. This part is what most people have in mind when the word “compatibility” is mentioned:

Physical compatibility: Do you find each other attractive? Is your sexual chemistry satisfying? Do you enjoy sharing the same bed, looking into each other’s eyes, touching, and embracing?

Transactional compatibility: "Do you enjoy the same movies? Do you have similar hobbies, enjoy the same books, engage in similar conversations, and like the same food? You don’t have to be exactly the same, but you need to have enough common interests to enjoy being together as much as being apart."
